Dear all
Once again, I am sorry for my delay in contacting you with a new assignment for this week. Given the fact that we are already half way through the week and with only two days to go before the actual winter break, I will give you a very short assignment to be submitted on Friday, July 17th.
I would like you to choose ONE episode that you found particularly striking (because it was funny or interesting or sad) about the novel BOY so far. Then, write 100 words explaining why you chose this episode and to what extent you may have felt identified with the events narrated.
I hope to see you all in August.
Regards
Daniel Ferreyra

Literature 1st year: new assignments for JULY 2009
Dear all
I am giving you your new assignment for this week. It is made up of TWO parts, A and B. You must do both. This assignment must be submitted on Friday, August 10th at the latest. Remember to send me your work to my gmail account: danieruferreyra@gmail.com
Stay healthy and strong.

Boy, by Roald Dahl.
A) Read the chapters entitled “First Day”, “Writing Home” and “The Matron”. They deal with some aspects of life at St Peter’s School, a very traditional English boarding school. The children spend the whole week at school and only see their parents over the weekend. Answer the following questions based on your reading of the chapters.
1) What is a tuck-box? What did the children store in them?
2) Why does Roald Dahl say that the Headmaster encouraged parents to send their children “tuck” (=food)?
3) Who had access to the tuck-box?
4) What was shocking for Roald Dahl about his new Headmaster?
5) How did Roald Dahl feel when he was left at St Peter’s? Why?
6) How often did Roald write to his mother? What did she do with the letters?
7) Why couldn’t the children say “anything horrid about school” in the letters they wrote home?
8) Who was the Matron? Why did the children fear her so much?
9) What did a child called Wragg do one night? What was the consequence of his action for all the children?
10) In what position did Roald Dahl sleep every night? Why did he do that?
11) Why did the Matron put some soap into Tweedie’s mouth?
B) Go back to the chapters you had to read for point 1 and do the following assignment.
Imagine that you are Roald Dahl. Write a letter to your mother telling her about your life in the boarding school. Imagine that this letter will not be checked by the Headmaster, so feel free to write anything you want.
You must include the following points:
· The Headmaster.
· The food at school.
· The tuck-box.
· Letter writing.
· The way the Headmaster controls the letters.
· The Matron.
· Your classmates, including Wragg, Arkle and Tweedie.
· Life in the dormitories.
· Your routine before going to bed.
· How much you miss home.
Write the letter based on your reading of the novel. Use your own words: DO NOT simply copy large sections of the novel. Write around 180 words.
This assignment should be submitted on Friday, August 10th.
